At Booth Radiology, we pay special attention to breast imaging. We perform ultrasound guided fine needle biopsies, stereotactic biopsies and MRI guided breast biopsies in a comfortable and private setting.
Easy preparation
You may want to have a relative
or friend join you to lend support and to drive you home after the procedure. If you are taking
aspirin or a blood thinner, your physician may want you to stop these medications in advance of the biopsy (usually three days). Consult with your physician.
About the procedure
Performed under local anesthesia, the procedure can usually be completed in less than an hour. Using ultrasound, mammography, or MRI, our radiologist will localize the lesion that requires biopsy. For both stereotactic and MRI guided biopsies, you will be lying on your belly for the entirety of the procedure. For ultrasound guided biopsies, you will be lying on your back. A small nick is made in the skin and the tip of the biopsy needle
is advanced to the lesion. Additional pictures of the biopsy site will be taken.
If they show that the lesion has been mostly or completely removed, a small
clip may be left at the biopsy site so that it can be easily located if the lesion
proves to be cancer. Afterwards the skin opening is covered with a dressing
without the need for sutures.
